Animal Models of Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) and Steatohepatitis (MASH)
Cyagen Exclusive White Paper

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is the steatotic liver disease associated with metabolic syndrome that is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. It affects more than 30% of the global population and the leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality. MASLD is a hepatopathy syndrome affecting both adults and children, characterized by a range of liver conditions including simple fatty liver, steatohepatitis, fatty liver fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Furthermore, the presence of obesity-related metabolic syndromes—including obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and glucose intolerance—increases the likelihood that a patient has metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) rather than simple steatosis. MASH is the advanced stage of MASLD. MASLD can advance from simple fatty liver into metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH)-related inflammation and liver fibrosis, and even lead to end-stage liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), or liver failure.
